Selling a vehicle to a private owner.

The seller has to notify the California department of motor vehicles about the transfer of vehicle ownership within a duration of 5 days of the sale. This can be done online or through mail and it will be your responsibility to provide the required documents to the buyer like-

  • original car title.
  • Smog certification proof for cars more than 4 years old.
  • Odometer mileage if applicable.

If there were any previous lienholders of the car, it is mandatory to get their signatures on the title.  You will also have to provide a duplicate title for the vehicle if the car is less than 2 years old.

 

Buying a vehicle from a private owner.

The buyers have to notify the California DMV about the transfer of vehicle ownership within a duration of 10 days from the Purchase date.  Here are the documents that are required in that process.

  • The original car title with the signature of the seller.  A bill of sale has  to be provided also in case the person available on the title is not the seller.
  •  Smog certification proof.
  •  Odometer mileage for the cars less than 10 years old.
  •  A vehicle title transfer fee of $15. Some other fees and taxes may also be included.

 

The same documents are required in case you are receiving or gifting the vehicle to someone. The only difference is that in case of receiving the car as a gift, you need a completed Statement of Facts and a completed Affidavit for Transfer Without Probate document.
